My birdwatcher friend, Antoine, took that from his lawn.
It was very late and the Sun was setting

He has it (and it should be 'them') all year. Sure he lives
right by the river which is not frozen because of the current.

Lucky him... As for me, I think Cooper's Hawk played a role
in keeping my backyard empty these last few weeks...

The best part is that it was right above their house...

A year ago, today

No good pictures these last few days. So I went back in
time and got this Carolina Wren we had here for over
3 months (Nov. 2010 - Mar. 2011).

Quite unusual for the region and the time. It had plenty
to eat and fresh water, this probably made the difference.

I've been checking outside every day and still have'nt
seen it.

With the back yard empty I dont think there are many
chances of seeing it. BUT NEVER say never.

On top of having only a few birds at this time of year,
I got about 30 of these Starlings in the backyard today.

OK, I do say that if you love birds you love'em ALL.
But this one (and the Grackle) I dont know...

The problem with them is that they eat everything and
dont let the others birds come close.:-(

Yes with the little Saw-whet Owl Pic I caught around
the beginning of the year (in January).

I still haven't found it but I'll keep on looking. :-)

Can you see it in that Pic? This is an unpublished
photo. I remember passing by that tree, I knew
she was there, I made a few steps more and turned
around and clicked a couple more times.

It was the last day I saw it (Pics are here)

Ya we had about 2 or 3 inches of the white stuff.

This one might just stay with the forecast around and
below 0C it will probably stay.

Coming to work after I got in I turned around and saw
that I had missed something. The early morning Sun
gives a yellowish tint to the building and trees.

It was beautiful so I snapped it with my small Canon
Elf camera.

Cooper's Hawk at the park

I saw it coming towards me and he flew right above me
at about 10 feet. I then realized it was a Hawk as I first
thaught it was the Pileated Woodpecker. Then he went
not to far in a tall tree. I had time to walk toward him
and snap a couple of shots that I had to work out a
bit (I was against the light).

Not much for me this last week for the Website
maybe I better take a break. :-) Do visit anyway and

At the park this morning I saw this Red-winged Blackbird,
actually there was two. Quite unusual for this time of year.

No snow yet here, so they might decided to move on after

came back with a fish (think it's a perch). But this
is a first for me. There is always a first time.

Pileated Woodpecker Hole

quite recent. This one is not the largest I've seen but
still it's quite large and to give an idea of the size I put

A beautiful White-throated Sparrow it is...

I've got many in my backyard this year. They should stay
until the first snowfall which could be this week or next
according to the forecast.

I do help'em out a bit by spreading seeds all over the
backyard... :-)

And some Song Sparrows too. We had some nesting close
by this year.

October 1st and Sappy the is still riding the Hummer
feeder on my balcony, this feeder is almost empty so
I guess he's feeding pretty hard on it and the other two
feeders have gone down quite a bit also.

Without knowing how long he'll be at it I'll have make
another batch of juice for Sappy.

Madame Purple the Gallinule, again

Went back to the Marsh to check out on Purple again
( the immature or juvenile Purple Gallinule). I started
to take pictures as I saw her coming towards me. I was
on the boardwalk and the bird at about 200 feet. Then
Madame Purple came right close to the boardwalk and
went for the weeds.

Even stranger, all of a sudden she came right on the boardwalk
real close to us (we were about ten waiting for her) and back in
the Marsh.

A Rare Bird at our Marsh & LIFER

An Immature American Purple Gallinule at the Marsh
and a LIFER.

She came real close to our pleasure. There was
about 40 cams clicking at the same time.

This bird should be in Florida, she must of been caught
in one of the tropical storms that went over our heads
either Lee or Irene.

Taking a bath

Ok you want an explanation? Here we go, this is not a birdbath.
On each of my Hummingbird feeders I fitted a little bowl
(the bottom of a plastic bottle) which was first done to keep
the ants from reaching the nectar and it worked quite good.

But after after a while Chickadees started to drink in the
them and this summer I saw a few taking their bath in them.

It is, for them, a good supply of water and now it looks
like it's also a bath.

Hard headed Sparrow

at my left that hit the brick wall. I came close and saw
a little bird hanging on the neighbor's table. I had time

Eastern Kingbird again

A much better picture than the other one, cause yesterday
was a sunny one...

Some wondered about this picture.

This Kingbird is at the top of an old dead tree, about 15 feet
in high and about 20 feet away from the boardwalk at the Marsh

This old tree is dry and should be down by now, but it still
holding on.

And BTW Kingbirds have been nesting there for 3 to 4 years.

I guess they know...

Feeding the Crows...

Sitting on my balcony since 5h30 with my coffee, rainy
day, no light. Crows are coming and going so I decided
to see how they would react if I threw a peace of dry
bread.

It's real funny to observe them as they slowly make
their way cautiously, in a dance-like manner, to the piece
of bread, snatch it and fly away...

Been trying to find a way to capture this bird on picture,
think I found one here... They are quite hard to get...

The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is the one that make all
these holes in the White Birch tree.

This also the same tree were the Hummingbirds go
to feed on a regular basis

Birds... always surprising

This is just a plain Downy Woodpecker, but what is
surprising is that the kid is savoring the sweet sap of the
White Birch Tree from the holes that the Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker made in that tree.

Well that's one more customer eating from these holes.
Until now I've seen the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,
Downy Woodpecker, Hummingbird, bees, wasps
and Butterflies eating that sweep juice.

I think the next species will be me :-) Why not, it's only
sucrose and glucose. It's about half the sweetness of the
maple sap. Hell, why dont you all check it out HERE

a bit too big for him...

Another LIFER for me today. A Sphinx Butterfly,
It moves just as fast as a Hummingbird and is often
confused as a Hummer but it's not...

First Hummer in the Wild this year

Found the Kid, yesterday at the Marsh. Went back this
morning and he was in the same dead tree...

At about 30 feet up it's kinda tricky to get a good photo,
anyway I'm having a good time with him.

I've spent soooo much time watching Hummers in the
last few years I can spot them like that (your eyes and
brain get used to its flyby).

Hummers are really my babies, if I had to relive again
I'd be a biologist with a major in Humminbirds :-)

Now I'm gona try to find more as I have studied their
habits much.

You all think I'm crazy, your right... Hummer crazy

Just think at the mileage they do in a year.

Poor little Red-winged Blackbird got out of the nest too
soon. Now he's stuck, cant go back but mom and dad,
who were bitching after me, seemed to be feeding him

This female Hummer is the new kid on the block

I'm not sure if she'll stay long, cause the other female
Hummer gave her a hell of a ride after she spotted this
